Human beings have an innate tendency to be negative. Nature has shaped us to be wary of danger…which translates in the modern world to a heightened sensitivity to perceived negative events — plus a dismissing or minimizing on positive events. We kick ourselves for the one stupid thing we said yesterday while ignoring the thousand brilliant, witty or thoughtful other things we said. We dwell on the jerk that cut us off in traffic rather than the hundreds of polite drivers who are operating their vehicles more sanely. We kvetch about the one muscle that’s aching, rather than the other 638 muscles that are A-OK.
