Enjoying and celebrating our talents is something we don’t always remember to do.
So on this Independence Day, whether you’re a writer, artist, entrepreneur, musician or a combination, let’s take a moment to reflect on how lucky we are as creative people to be here at this place and time.
Ironically, just this morning, July 4, I finished writing a film treatment of a book that is based on a true story that takes place in Stalinist Russia. I immersed myself in that place and time. And it made me look at my life and my creative talents in a new way.
On this blog, we write a lot about things like writer’s block and procrastination and overwhelm that we multi-talented people often face…and even more often whine about.
On this Independence Day, I say, let us give thanks for all of them.
Let us be grateful, for instance, that our only writer’s block is between our ears. We don’t have to worry about the authorities making us disappear if we write something they don’t like.
When we procrastinate, it’s in our own hands, not a society’s that prevents us from doing what we yearn to do.
When we are overwhelmed, it’s because of the superabundance of wonderful choices that are open to us, in a place where we free to pursue any career we choose, or start our own businesses, living a life based on our own passions and abilities.
Yes, things are tough all over. But they are tougher in some places than others.
Be happy the worst tyranny most of us will ever have to suffer is the tyranny of the blank page.
And then, go ahead and fill one.
Happy Independence Day.

Thanks, Lisa – I’m so happy you’ve posted on this perspective. Our ability to ‘create’ is such a gift and we need to be reminded that oft times the only feat is to overcome our own insecurities.
Thanks for the reminder.
My celebration of creative indendence (today) has been to move furniture and throw/give away things to create a more free environment in my sunroom. (That’s the place where I most often write.) It’s amazing how shifting the environment around you makes everything feel new!
So true. It’s easy to forget just how blessed we are to be able to pursue our talents and express our creativity.

Lisa,
What a way to “thank our lucky stars” as we salute and celebrate the freedom of our country. Agreed, our tyranny is not nearly the plight of others; so today, I fill my blank paper with these words. “I’m proud to be an American…..I love this land…God bless the USA” At least I know I’m free…free to write, accept abundant thoughts and ideas…those ideas are freely creating a business and a lifestyle that fills my soul with joy! So, no matter the tyranny of a blank page, celebrate the massive freedom to think and create NEW outcomes!
Happy July 4th!
