Some of us get to work with our talents. Many of us think we are using our talents to their fullest in our jobs for years — until the pink slip comes.
The world of advertising is especially harsh in this way. The ad agency demands virtual indentured servitude from creative people, nights, weekends, cancelled vacations are the norm rather than the exception. Then, when creatives are let go after years of faithful service, it’s often nothing to do with their talent — it’s just that someone younger (and cheaper) has come along.
This leaves whole generations of creative talent all full of ideas and nowhere to go. Happily, some of them find that it’s a chance to finally do what they’d been putting off during those years at the grindstone for someone else.
Check out this inspiring movie trailer for the documentary “Lemonade” by Erik Proulx. I don’t know any of these people personally, but I know people like them: friends, former colleagues and current clients. Most of them have made lemonade and are happy about it — and it’s not sour grapes. Enjoy.
