One of the great challenges for DaVincis — creative people juggling several projects, talents and ideas — is to live a well- balanced life. If only we could balance the creative and the practical, the personal and the professional, the urgent and the important. If only we could do all that is on our personal and professional ‘to do’ lists while simultaneously attending to our health, nurturing our important relationships and taking good care of our responsibilities.

It’s unlikely that we’ll achieve perfect balance in every life domain on every day of our lives…yet we certainly can take steps to live a more balanced life. As discussed in a previous article, we can set aside time to examine our different life domains and then commit to giving more attention to those aspects of life that are currently getting short shrift.

We can also make some small adjustments on a daily basis, simply by asking ourselves two key questions every morning:

Daily Question #1. What’s one thing I can do today that would make me feel terrific?

Be candid with yourself. Allow your internal self will tell you what you need most — whatever you’re yearning for deep down. It might be to accomplish something that’s been weighing on your mind — to cross something specific off your ‘to do’ lists. Then again, your inner self might be craving a walk. Or a nap. Or tea with a friend. It could be that the kitchen needs attention. Or your spouse. Or your finances.

The phrasing of this question is key. You’re not asking ‘What should I do today?’ or “What do I have to do today?’ or ‘What’s my priority today?’. You’re asking yourself what would raise your spirits. And that’s the purpose of this: simply to feel better. When you feel better about your life, you’ll be better equipped to deal with everything on your plate — with less stress and more contentment.

Here’s the great part: there’s no one right answer. Whatever springs to mind on a particular morning is perfect.

Daily question #2: If I had an uninterrupted thirty minutes today to spend on anything I wish, how would I spend it?

This may spark a similar answer to Question #1 — or it might trigger a completely different answer. The first question evokes a gut response while the second evokes action. Today, for example, when I asked myself the two questions, my answer to the first was “spend some time outside” while my answer to the second was “filing”. My inner self was craving Vitamin D, while my inner neatnik was wanting to restore order to my desk. By asking the two questions, I was able to identify two different, entirely doable activities — both of which amounted to small adjustments in my life balance.

Why thirty minutes? It’s enough time to accomplish something — yet small enough to fit into any day. Yes, you are worth thirty minutes a day. (You’re actually worth more, but let’s use ‘thirty’ as a starting point).

Try this: ask yourself the two questions every day this week. Experience the impact that small daily adjustments can have on your life balance.

When things aren’t going the way you’d like — when you encounter rejection or apparent failure — it can be challenging to keep going. This is especially true for DaVincis — multi-talented people juggling diverse projects — because rejection in one arena can damage motivation in our many other activities. Really, the only way to change rejections or ‘failures’ into successes to keep trying — to persist. To persevere. Now sometimes, your dedication to a project is so passionate that you don’t think twice about persisting. But should your perseverance wane, it’s helpful to consider examples of when others have persisted.

Consider, for example, when film critic Roger Ebert won the fabled New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest. “So what,” you may think. “He’s a smart guy. A Pulitzer Prize winning journalist. Big deal.” What’s interesting about it is that he failed in his first 106 attempts. It wasn’t until his 107th entry that he finally won. It’s an unexpected story of persistence — of perseverance. And it’s not as if Roger Ebert doesn’t have other things going on. He’s a multi-tasking syndicated columnist and blogger who hosts an annual film festival and writes books. He’s published a cookbook, for heaven’s sake, even though he’s now unable to eat. Actually, that’s another pretty awesome display of persistence and perseverance in itself, no? When Roger Ebert’s cancer robbed him of the capacity to eat solid food he went ahead and wrote the cookbook he’d always wanted to produce.

Roger Ebert is not alone. Woven into most success stories are tales of perseverance and the power of persistence. Consider these examples:

* Colonel” Harland Sanders’ infamous chicken recipe was rejected 1,009 times before he found a restaurant to accept it.

* although Emily Dickinson only had a handful of poems published during her lifetime, she kept writing…leaving almost 1,800 completed works

* it took Thomas Edison over 1,000 tries to perfect the light bulb. He has been quoted as saying “Results? Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward.”

* Winston Churchill lost every election for public office in which he ran…until age 62 when we became Prime Minister of England.

* for the early part of her career, Lucille Ball was denigrated as a ‘B’ movie star and a lousy actress. She persisted and eventually created an extremely successful television career.

* Jack London’s first story was rejected six hundred times before the author of Call of the Wild and White Fang finally found a willing publisher.

* R.H. Macy’s first seven businesses failed before he created a successful enterprise in the form of Macy’s department store.

*     *      *

Activity: Think of an instance in which you persisted. What was the experience like for you at the time? How did you continue on? What were the benefits of persisting?

Activity: What’s something currently on your plate that would benefit from your persistence. What can you do to encourage yourself to persevere?

Business Gurus

These businessmen and the companies they founded are today known around the world, but as these stories show, their beginnings weren’t always smooth.

Henry Ford: While Ford is today known for his innovative assembly line and American-made cars, he wasn’t an instant success. In fact, his early businesses failed and left him broke five time before he founded the successful Ford Motor Company.

R. H. Macy: Most people are familiar with this large department store chain, but Macy didn’t always have it easy. Macy started seven failed business before finally hitting big with his store in New York City.

F. W. Woolworth: Some may not know this name today, but Woolworth was once one of the biggest names in department stores in the U.S. Before starting his own business, young Woolworth worked at a dry goods store and was not allowed to wait on customers because his boss said he lacked the sense needed to do so.

Soichiro Honda: The billion-dollar business that is Honda began with a series of failures and fortunate turns of luck. Honda was turned down by Toyota Motor Corporation for a job after interviewing for a job as an engineer, leaving him jobless for quite some time. He started making scooters of his own at home, and spurred on by his neighbors, finally started his own business.

Akio Morita: You may not have heard of Morita but you’ve undoubtedly heard of his company, Sony. Sony’s first product was a rice cooker that unfortunately didn’t cook rice so much as burn it, selling less than 100 units. This first setback didn’t stop Morita and his partners as they pushed forward to create a multi-billion dollar company.

Bill Gates: Gates didn’t seem like a shoe-in for success after dropping out of Harvard and starting a failed first business with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen called Traf-O-Data. While this early idea didn’t work, Gates’ later work did, creating the global empire that is Microsoft.

Harland David Sanders: Perhaps better known as Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame, Sanders had a hard time selling his chicken at first. In fact, his famous secret chicken recipe was rejected 1,009 times before a restaurant accepted it.

Walt Disney: Today Disney rakes in billions from merchandise, movies and theme parks around the world, but Walt Disney himself had a bit of a rough start. He was fired by a newspaper editor because, “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” After that, Disney started a number of businesses that didn’t last too long and ended with bankruptcy and failure. He kept plugging along, however, and eventually found a recipe for success that worked.

Scientists and Thinkers

These people are often regarded as some of the greatest minds of our century, but they often had to face great obstacles, the ridicule of their peers and the animosity of society.

Albert Einstein: Most of us take Einstein’s name as synonymous with genius, but he didn’t always show such promise. Einstein did not speak until he was four and did not read until he was seven, causing his teachers and parents to think he was mentally handicapped, slow and anti-social. Eventually, he was expelled from school and was refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic School. It might have taken him a bit longer, but most people would agree that he caught on pretty well in the end, winning the Nobel Prize and changing the face of modern physics.

Charles Darwin: In his early years, Darwin gave up on having a medical career and was often chastised by his father for being lazy and too dreamy. Darwin himself wrote, “I was considered by all my masters and my father, a very ordinary boy, rather below the common standard of intellect.” Perhaps they judged too soon, as Darwin today is well-known for his scientific studies.

Robert Goddard: Goddard today is hailed for his research and experimentation with liquid-fueled rockets, but during his lifetime his ideas were often rejected and mocked by his scientific peers who thought they were outrageous and impossible. Today rockets and space travel don’t seem far-fetched at all, due largely in part to the work of this scientist who worked against the feelings of the time.

Isaac Newton: Newton was undoubtedly a genius when it came to math, but he had some failings early on. He never did particularly well in school and when put in charge of running the family farm, he failed miserably, so poorly in fact that an uncle took charge and sent him off to Cambridge where he finally blossomed into the scholar we know today.

Socrates: Despite leaving no written records behind, Socrates is regarded as one of the greatest philosophers of the Classical era. Because of his new ideas, in his own time he was called “an immoral corrupter of youth” and was sentenced to death. Socrates didn’t let this stop him and kept right on, teaching up until he was forced to poison himself.

Robert Sternberg: This big name in psychology received a C in his first college introductory psychology class with his teacher telling him that, “there was already a famous Sternberg in psychology and it was obvious there would not be another.” Sternberg showed him, however, graduating from Stanford with exceptional distinction in psychology, summa cum laude, and Phi Beta Kappa and eventually becoming the President of the American Psychological Association.

Inventors

These inventors changed the face of the modern world, but not without a few failed prototypes along the way.

Thomas Edison: In his early years, teachers told Edison he was “too stupid to learn anything.” Work was no better, as he was fired from his first two jobs for not being productive enough. Even as an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. Of course, all those unsuccessful attempts finally resulted in the design that worked.

Orville and Wilbur Wright: These brothers battled depression and family illness before starting the bicycle shop that would lead them to experimenting with flight. After numerous attempts at creating flying machines, several years of hard work, and tons of failed prototypes, the brothers finally created a plane that could get airborne and stay there.

Public Figures

From politicians to talk show hosts, these figures had a few failures before they came out on top.

Winston Churchill: This Nobel Prize-winning, twice-elected Prime Minster of the United Kingdom wasn’t always as well regarded as he is today. Churchill struggled in school and failed the sixth grade. After school he faced many years of political failures, as he was defeated in every election for public office until he finally became the Prime Minister at the ripe old age of 62.

Abraham Lincoln: While today he is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of our nation, Lincoln’s life wasn’t so easy. In his youth he went to war a captain and returned a private (if you’re not familiar with military ranks, just know that private is as low as it goes.) Lincoln didn’t stop failing there, however. He started numerous failed business and was defeated in numerous runs he made for public office.

Oprah Winfrey: Most people know Oprah as one of the most iconic faces on TV as well as one of the richest and most successful women in the world. Oprah faced a hard road to get to that position, however, enduring a rough and often abusive childhood as well as numerous career setbacks including being fired from her job as a television reporter because she was “unfit for tv.”

Harry S. Truman: This WWI vet, Senator, Vice President and eventual President eventually found success in his life, but not without a few missteps along the way. Truman started a store that sold silk shirts and other clothing–seemingly a success at first–only go bankrupt a few years later.

Dick Cheney: This recent Vice President and businessman made his way to the White House but managed to flunk out of Yale University, not once, but twice. Former President George W. Bush joked with Cheney about this fact, stating, “So now we know –if you graduate from Yale, you become president. If you drop out, you get to be vice president.”

Hollywood Types

These faces ought to be familiar from the big screen, but these actors, actresses and directors saw their fair share of rejection and failure before they made it big.

Jerry Seinfeld: Just about everybody knows who Seinfeld is, but the first time the young comedian walked on stage at a comedy club, he looked out at the audience, froze and was eventually jeered and booed off of the stage. Seinfeld knew he could do it, so he went back the next night, completed his set to laughter and applause, and the rest is history.

Fred Astaire: In his first screen test, the testing director of MGM noted that Astaire, “Can’t act. Can’t sing. Slightly bald. Can dance a little.” Astaire went on to become an incredibly successful actor, singer and dancer and kept that note in his Beverly Hills home to remind him of where he came from.

Sidney Poitier: After his first audition, Poitier was told by the casting director, “Why don’t you stop wasting people’s time and go out and become a dishwasher or something?” Poitier vowed to show him that he could make it, going on to win an Oscar and become one of the most well-regarded actors in the business.

Jeanne Moreau: As a young actress just starting out, this French actress was told by a casting director that she was simply not pretty enough to make it in films. He couldn’t have been more wrong as Moreau when on to star in nearly 100 films and win numerous awards for her performances.

Charlie Chaplin: It’s hard to imagine film without the iconic Charlie Chaplin, but his act was initially rejected by Hollywood studio chiefs because they felt it was a little too nonsensical to ever sell.

Lucille Ball: During her career, Ball had thirteen Emmy nominations and four wins, also earning the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kennedy Center Honors. Before starring in I Love Lucy, Ball was widely regarded as a failed actress and a B movie star. Even her drama instructors didn’t feel she could make it, telling her to try another profession. She, of course, proved them all wrong.

Harrison Ford: In his first film, Ford was told by the movie execs that he simply didn’t have what it takes to be a star. Today, with numerous hits under his belt, iconic portrayals of characters like Han Solo and Indiana Jones, and a career that stretches decades, Ford can proudly show that he does, in fact, have what it takes.

Marilyn Monroe: While Monroe’s star burned out early, she did have a period of great success in her life. Despite a rough upbringing and being told by modeling agents that she should instead consider being a secretary, Monroe became a pin-up, model and actress that still strikes a chord with people today.

Oliver Stone: This Oscar-winning filmmaker began his first novel while at Yale, a project that eventually caused him to fail out of school. This would turn out to be a poor decision as the the text was rejected by publishers and was not published until 1998, at which time it was not well-received. After dropping out of school, Stone moved to Vietnam to teach English, later enlisting in the army and fighting in the war, a battle that earning two Purple Hearts and helped him find the inspiration for his later work that often center around war.

Writers and Artists

We’ve all heard about starving artists and struggling writers, but these stories show that sometimes all that work really does pay off with success in the long run.

Vincent Van Gogh: During his lifetime, Van Gogh sold only one painting, and this was to a friend and only for a very small amount of money. While Van Gogh was never a success during his life, he plugged on with painting, sometimes starving to complete his over 800 known works. Today, they bring in hundreds of millions.

Emily Dickinson: Recluse and poet Emily Dickinson is a commonly read and loved writer. Yet in her lifetime she was all but ignored, having fewer than a dozen poems published out of her almost 1,800 completed works.

Theodor Seuss Giesel: Today nearly every child has read The Cat in the Hat or Green Eggs and Ham, yet 27 different publishers rejected Dr. Seuss’s first book To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.

Charles Schultz: Schultz’s Peanuts comic strip has had enduring fame, yet this cartoonist had every cartoon he submitted rejected by his high school yearbook staff. Even after high school, Schultz didn’t have it easy, applying and being rejected for a position working with Walt Disney.

Steven Spielberg: While today Spielberg’s name is synonymous with big budget, he was rejected from the University of Southern California School of Theater, Film and Television three times. He eventually attended school at another location, only to drop out to become a director before finishing. Thirty-five years after starting his degree, Spielberg returned to school in 2002 to finally complete his work and earn his BA.

Stephen King: The first book by this author, the iconic thriller Carrie, received 30 rejections, finally causing King to give up and throw it in the trash. His wife fished it out and encouraged him to resubmit it, and the rest is history, with King now having hundreds of books published the distinction of being one of the best-selling authors of all time.

Zane Grey: Incredibly popular in the early 20th century, this adventure book writer began his career as a dentist, something he quickly began to hate. So, he began to write, only to see rejection after rejection for his works, being told eventually that he had no business being a writer and should given up. It took him years, but at 40, Zane finally got his first work published, leaving him with almost 90 books to his name and selling over 50 million copies worldwide.

J. K. Rowling: Rowling may be rolling in a lot of Harry Potter dough today, but before she published the series of novels she was nearly penniless, severely depressed, divorced, trying to raise a child on her own while attending school and writing a novel. Rowling went from depending on welfare to survive to being one of the richest women in the world in a span of only five years through her hard work and determination.

Monet: Today Monet’s work sells for millions of dollars and hangs in some of the most prestigious institutions in the world. Yet during his own time, it was mocked and rejected by the artistic elite, the Paris Salon. Monet kept at his impressionist style, which caught on and in many ways was a starting point for some major changes to art that ushered in the modern era.

Jack London: This well-known American author wasn’t always such a success.

Musicians

While their music is some of the best selling, best loved and most popular around the world today, these musicians show that it takes a whole lot of determination to achieve success.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Mozart began composing at the age of five, writing over 600 pieces of music that today are lauded as some of the best ever created. Yet during his lifetime, Mozart didn’t have such an easy time, and was often restless, leading to his dismissal from a position as a court musician in Salzberg. He struggled to keep the support of the aristocracy and died with little to his name.

Elvis Presley: As one of the best-selling artists of all time, Elvis has become a household name even years after his death. But back in 1954, Elvis was still a nobody, and Jimmy Denny, manager of the Grand Ole Opry, fired Elvis Presley after just one performance telling him, “You ain’t goin’ nowhere, son. You ought to go back to drivin’ a truck.”

Igor Stravinsky: In 1913 when Stravinsky debuted his now famous Rite of Spring, audiences rioted, running the composer out of town. Yet it was this very work that changed the way composers in the 19th century thought about music and cemented his place in musical history.

The Beatles: Few people can deny the lasting power of this super group, still popular with listeners around the world today. Yet when they were just starting out, a recording company told them no. The were told “we don’t like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out,” two things the rest of the world couldn’t have disagreed with more.

Ludwig van Beethoven: In his formative years, young Beethoven was incredibly awkward on the violin and was often so busy working on his own compositions that he neglected to practice. Despite his love of composing, his teachers felt he was hopeless at it and would never succeed with the violin or in composing. Beethoven kept plugging along, however, and composed some of the best-loved symphonies of all time–five of them while he was completely deaf.

Athletes

While some athletes rocket to fame, others endure a path fraught with a little more adversity, like those listed here.

Michael Jordan: Most people wouldn’t believe that a man often lauded as the best basketball player of all time was actually cut from his high school basketball team. Luckily, Jordan didn’t let this setback stop him from playing the game and he has stated, “I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Stan Smith: This tennis player was rejected from even being a lowly ball boy for a Davis Cup tennis match because event organizers felt he was too clumsy and uncoordinated. Smith went on to prove them wrong, showcasing his not-so-clumsy skills by winning Wimbledon, U. S. Open and eight Davis Cups.

Babe Ruth: You probably know Babe Ruth because of his home run record (714 during his career), but along with all those home runs came a pretty hefty amount of strikeouts as well (1,330 in all). In fact, for decades he held the record for strikeouts. When asked about this he simply said, “Every strike brings me closer to the next home run.”

Tom Landry: As the coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Landry brought the team two Super Bowl victories, five NFC Championship victories and holds the records for the record for the most career wins. He also has the distinction of having one of the worst first seasons on record (winning no games) and winning five or fewer over the next four seasons.

Who have been the greatest positive influences on your life, personally and professionally? Who has supported you? Who has inspired you? Do they know how important or meaningful they have been to you?

Recently, my friend Mari invited thirteen female friends to a luncheon to honour the “Significant Women in her Life”. Over sparkling wine and a light salad meal, she gave a short speech to explain why each guest was there. Mari noted the commonalities among them — how the threads of their lives had woven together.

I adore this idea and would love to replicate it — however to do so, I would have to overcome some logistical challenges. First, the Significant Women in my Life are far-flung around the globe. Hard to imagine they’d fly into California for lunch.

Second, I haven’t actually met some of Significant Women in my Life. When I think about the women who’ve had the biggest influence on me, topping the list is my creative hero, Julia Cameron. Her book, The Artist’s Way, triggered my escape from the corporate world into more creative pursuits.

A personal choice would be Mollie Katzen, author of many seminal vegetarian cookbooks beginning with The Moosewood Cookbook (a.k.a. the Vegetarian Bible). As someone who’s not eaten meat for decades, I’m grateful indeed to have had Mollie Katzen’s recipes enhancing my culinary repertoire.

In an ideal world, I’d love to invite my career role models — Martha Beck (Finding Your Own North Star, The Joy Diet), Barbara Sher (I Could Do Anything if Only I Knew What It Was, Live the Life you Love), Susan Jeffers (Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway, Embracing Uncertainty) and M.J. Ryan (Attitudes of Gratitude, The Happiness Makeover). I’d had the honour of corresponding with them…and actually collaborating with the latter two on a book about happiness. What a thrill it would be to meet these women in person — to bask in their wisdom, candour and good humour.

And while I’m dreaming, I’d also invite to my Fantasy Lunch with Significant Women in my Life those artists who have inspired and enlightened me: multi-talented artists such as Joni Mitchell and Joan Armatrading plus writers including Margaret Atwood, Anne Tyler and J.K. Rowling. There is something about their creative works that resonates deep down.

Next, I’d compile a list of the Significant Men in my Life — but I’ll spare you the details.

The point of this exercise is to

(a) identify and

(b) express appreciation

for those people — women AND men — who have enhanced our lives, personally and professionally.

It’s important and helpful to take time to actually express gratitude to those people who have inspired, supported or guided us. It doesn’t matter how — a verbal ‘thank you’, a written card, a post on social media, a gift, a meal — whatever is appropriate under the circumstances.

Why bother?

1. By acknowledging the positive influences in your life, you are strengthening those bonds.

2. It’s far more helpful to focus on what’s been good in your life than the alternative.

3. No person on the planet hears ‘thank you’ too much. No-one is ‘sick and tired’ of being appreciated. Saying ‘thank you’ to someone is always worthwhile — no matter who your hero or role model or supporter may be.

How do you finish your projects? Do you celebrate and reward your accomplishments or do you race right into the next thing?

Often, DaVincis have so much going on that whatever we finish is overshadowed by our many as-of-yet-undone ideas and projects. Looking at this tsunami of things ‘to do’, it’s challenging to allow ourselves a victory lap. (“I can’t stop for a party now! I have too much more to do!” )

It’s challenging and it’s important. When you acknowledge and celebrate what you finish, you boost your motivation, creativity and productivity.

When we shortchange our accomplishments or scrimp on celebrating them, we’re basically devaluing what we do. We’re training ourselves to toil without relief — which is demotivating and can squelch our creativity. We need to reward our creative juices to keep them flowing.

Whatever you finish next, finish it well.

Reward your efforts with two special celebrations: One with only yourself. Pour yourself a glass of champagne or take a solitary walk in nature or a fun daytrip or a mini-vacation. Give yourself a treat to mark the conclusion of your efforts. Pat yourself on the back. Take some time for private refection, ideally journaling about your own private feelings about your project. What went well? What didn’t? What did you learn? What would you do differently, next time?

Plan a second celebration with friends and loved ones who supported you while you were doing the project. This is a chance to thank them and to allow them to share your success. It also validates your efforts and accomplishments publicly.

*****

What about you? How do you like to acknowledge what you finish? What happens when you don’t? We’d love to hear from you in the comments section below.

It’s hard to imagine a harder working DaVinci: Tina Fey published a best-selling book while helming, co-writing and acting in a top television show and various movie projects.

From Wikipedia:

Fey first broke into comedy as a featured player in the Chicago-based improvisational comedy group The Second City. She then joined SNL as a writer, later becoming head writer and a performer, known for her position as co-anchor in the Weekend Update segment. In 2004 she adapted the screenplay Mean Girls in which she also co-starred. After leaving SNL in 2006, she created the television series 30 Rock, a situation comedy loosely based on her experiences at SNL. In the series, Fey portrays the head writer of a fictional sketch comedy series. In 2008, she starred in the comedy film Baby Mama, alongside former SNL co-star Amy Poehler. Fey next appeared in the 2010 comedy films Date Night and Megamind.

She has received seven Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, four Screen Actors Guild Awards, four Writers Guild of America Awards and has been nominated for a Grammy Award for her autobiographical book Bossypants, which topped the The New York Times Best Seller list for five weeks. She was singled out as the performer who had the greatest impact on culture and entertainment in 2008 by the Associated Press, which gave her its AP Entertainer of the Year award for her satirical portrayal of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin in a guest appearance on SNL.[2] In 2010, Fey was the recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the youngest-ever winner of the award.[3]

Regrets. You’ve probably had a few. Do you dwell on them? Do you avoid thinking about them? Try this instead: try translating your past regrets into something positive in the present.

Consider the essay entitled ‘Fall In Love With Life’ penned by Betty Smith (author of the classic A Tree Grows in Brooklyn). Smith notes that “As a listening child, [she] often heard older people say [things like] “If only I had my life to live over…” She vowed to not fall prey to the same fate. Later in life, however, when she found herself “middle-aged and alone….[She], too, began to think: “If only I had my life to live over again.”

It’s natural — and a little scary — to contemplate ‘if only’. To muse alternative fates, as if we had any choice in the matter. For as much as I believe we do the best we can at any point in life, it is tempting to wonder (if not fantasize) about alternative scenarios. And it’s helpful to translate any past regrets into something positive — some action you can take or something you can appreciate about yourself in the present.

For example:

If only…I would have embraced my creative pursuits earlier. I was trained to work HARD — to toil and struggle and earn success. To pooh-pooh things that came easily. I loved writing as a kid but it was fun and easy and it never occurred to me to write professionally until much later in life.

Then again, had I started writing professionally when I was in my twenties, I would have withered in the face of editors’ rejections. As it happens, because I was a late bloomer in terms of having a byline, I had a much more secure and realistic perspective. I understood that an editor’s ‘no’ was not a personal affront but rather a reflection of available column space for that issue. If I’m honest with myself, my writing career would not have been feasible even one month before I actually started. And when I started, things clicked. Having decided to take the plunge, my submissions were snapped up by major newspapers almost as fast as I pitched them.

If only…I would have identified and dealt with my perfectionism earlier in life. I regret having caused myself and the people around me unnecessary stress and strain.

This one’s tougher. At this juncture, I see little benefit for the extra decades of angst. The only saving grace is that at least, eventually, I did learn the impact that perfectionism was having on me. Some people never do. And I know I’ve helped others avoid or abate the pain the perfectionism, for example in my Acceptance workbook. It’s gratifying to know that I’ve spared others some of what I (and the people around me) suffered.

If only…I would have traveled more during the past decade. I adore travel. I visited fifty countries early in life and then, about ten years ago, I stopped. Practicalities intervened and now, poof, it’s years later and I realize that I’ve been depriving myself of something important. Worse, I recognize that it’ll be more challenging for me to hoist my older carcass up the steps of Machu Picchu and otherwise around the globe than it would have been in my fitter days.

The point of this ‘if only’ is that I can do something about it…I need only make a point to travel more this year and in the years to come. (If not now, then when?)

So there’s something to be said for reflecting on your past regrets and mining them for gems. Here’s how:

* Clear some uninterrupted time. List your major regrets. Contemplate your ‘if only’s’.

* For each, ask yourself the following:

- What did I learn?

- What good came out of this?

- What positive action can I take now?

*****

What are your ‘if only’s’ — and what do they mean to you? We’d love to hear from you in the comment box below.

We’re told by all the self-help gurus that we can and should direct our minds. But when thoughts of worry, fear, regret and negativity seem more “realistic”, forcing positive thoughts feels about as natural as Barney the Dinosaur wandering into Jurassic Park.

However, I’ve begun to accept that feeling good actually works better than feeling sucky when it comes to getting things done. Rather than resting on your laurels and becoming lazy, you actually have more energy for the tasks at hand when you’re happy with yourself — and for that you need to think more happy thoughts.

Still, it somehow felt like I was “cheating” or being a foolish Pollyanna whenever I tried to consciously select ideas to focus on instead of accepting whatever “naturally” popped up.

But then I came up with this idea, which should appeal to the artsy among us (I know you’re out there). Why not think of your mind as an art gallery? One that YOU curate?

When I lived in Paris, I spent a lot of time — though not enough — at the Louvre. There was a big permanent collection, of course, but even with miles and miles of galleries, what was on display at any one time was only the tip of the iceberg. I believe 95% was out of sight, in storage, and only rotated into view every so often, if ever.

There is only so much room on the walls of a person’s consciousness. Yet, often we tend to hang a frightful piece we don’t like (or even a whole series), that makes us feel awful every time we look at it. It gets a prominent position in the permanent collection, right inside the entrance, so that we have to keep walking past it. Worst of all, it takes up so much space, there is no room for anything else.

I’m not saying you should try to deny the existence of your negative thoughts and fears (which never works). I’m simply suggesting you give them less wall space, and take over the curation of your own mind gallery.

In mine, I am removing and putting into cold storage:

Depictions of disasters that may or may not ever happen

The Fresco of every mistake I have ever made and fear i will make again (this one will need scraping off the wall)

The Tutu Series (Too Old, Too Late, Too Fat, Too Lame)

Pieces from the Coulda Woulda Shoulda period (also known as my Blue Period)

In their place, I have many attractive pieces I can hang:

Portraits of All the People Who Are On My Side

Pictures of my Accomplishments So Far

Sketches of Exciting Future Plans

Landscapes and Tableaux of all the Beauty in the World (much of it right outside my window)

Scenes from Happy Times in My Life

Vignettes of Things I am Grateful For

I find there is plenty here to fill up all the walls with interesting pictures, and think I will enjoy walking through this museum much more. I bet anyone I invite in will feel better about being there, too.

Activity: Think of habitual negative thoughts you experience often. Imagine them each as a picture, with a frame around it and everything. Now do the same with images associated with all the things you’d prefer to focus on. Maybe even draw them all on paper, post-its or index cards. Now pick half a dozen or so to display in the “permanent collection,” with the others saved for rotation. Place the unpleasant ones in “storage”, and envelope, perhaps. If you feel so called, you can burn or toss them.

I’m a self-help book junkie. I love reading them, working through the activities and, when relevant, recommending them to my coaching clients. I work with DaVincis — smart creative people who are juggling too many ideas, too many projects and too many talents. Over the years, these have been the books that I’ve recommended the most frequently:

1. The Now Habit by Neil Fiore

By far, the book I recommend the most to DaVincis is Neil Fiore’s classic. His ‘unschedule‘ technique is a proven way to beat procrastination and to get more balance in your life, thanks to the joy of ‘guilt-free play‘. As I wrote in a blurb for the cover of the most recent edition of the book: “it provides clear, practical, effective advice for getting things done without beating yourself up”.

2. Refuse to Choose by Barbara Sher

Tailored for DaVincis, this book provides many practical suggestions for managing too many ideas and too many projects. Like us here at DavinciDilemma, Barbara Sher knows the joy of pursuing more than one passion.

3. Finding Water by Julia Cameron

Most creative people know Julia Cameron from her seminal book The Artist’s Way. In this book, she addresses the topic most problematic for DaVincis — perseverance. If you find it challenging to ‘keep going’ on a project — especially amid all your competing ideas, projects and talents — this book offers much empathy and many practical activities to help you stay on track.

4. Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway by Susan Jeffers

Everyone feels fear. The difference is what people do with it. For some it’s fuel, for others it’s a stop sign. If fear is hampering your progress or interfering with your creativity, this book will guide you through it. Remember: whatever happens, you’ll handle it.

5. Acceptance: A Workshop for Perfectionists by Liisa Kyle

Many of my coaching clients are perfectionists — people who hold themselves (and those around them) to sky-hand standards. It’s a stressful, painful way to live. I developed this workbook as a way of offering practical exercises to address and reduce perfectionism.

6. Woulda Coulda Shoulda by Arthur Freeman and Rose DeWolf

If regrets are an issue for you, this is an excellent book for working through “what might have been”.

7. Ask & It is Given by Esther & Jerry Hicks

This “Law of Attraction” touchstone might seem like an odd recommendation. What’s been most useful for my coaching clients are the “22 processes” described in the back half of the book. These are effective activities and exercises through which you can adjust your thinking — and improve your attitude — about particular issues.

8. Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn

Meditation has myriad benefits to your health, well-being and creativity. This book is a good introductory primer on how to meditation

Quick! What are you thinking about? What’s on your mind right now? Whatever it is, it’s affecting your results. And your life.

First: how are you thinking?

Are you focused on one thing, or are your thoughts bouncing among different topics? To the extent that you can channel your thinking in one focused direction, you’ll make more progress. It’s fine to toggle between tasks — providing you do so on purpose. Spending a set amount of time on one mental task before purposefully switching to a different task is a powerful way to make the most out of your thinking. For example: if you’re embroiled in a brainstorming sessions, it’s not helpful to start analyzing/editing the merits of ideas — or devising implementation plans at the same time. It’s far more effective to first focus on idea generation exclusively. Once the ideas slow, then turn your cognitive machinery to analytical activities assessing the different options — the costs, the benefits, the consequences. A further shift would move your mental processing into prioritizing and selecting. Then devising implementation plans. By channeling and directing your mental activities with purpose, you’ll get more done, more effectively and with less stress.

Second, what kinds of things do you spend most of your time thinking about? What occupies your brain, for the most part?

Are you thinking primarily about your creative projects and topics that are most important to you — or are you preoccupied with ‘to do’s’ or ‘what if’s’ or ‘coulda woulda shouldas‘?

When I asked myself this question recently, I was shocked and horrified to realize I spend the vast majority of my time thinking about ‘to do’s’ and trivialities — rather than contemplating writing ideas or jewelry designs or world events or art history or the meaning of life or dozens of other, more substantial topics.

At first, I didn’t believe it so I spent a few days paying attention to whatever was on my mind. The sad reality was that that few great weighty topics drifted across my consciousness. Shockingly little occupied my mind, other than the day’s ‘to do’s’. Little thought was spent on The Big Picture. Minimal brainstorming about cool creative projects.

“I’m wasting my brain,” I concluded. “I’m frittering away my life, futzing over inconsequential matters.” I felt ashamed…and highly motivated to change the situation. Which brings me to the most important question:

What would you like to be thinking about? On what would you prefer to be spending your mental energy?

Luckily, we humans have the choice to contemplate whatever we wish. We can dabble in whatever topics interest us, in the privacy of our own minds. This is perhaps the greatest luxury we can give ourselves: to spend time thinking about whatever we consider to be important.

All it requires is a shift in focus — and perhaps a daily reminder until we establish the habit of devoting mental energy to Interesting, Important Topics.

Certainly, making this small change has reaped major improvements in my life. Why not give it a try and see how it is for you? I’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments section below.

*****

Activity: This week, keep track of what you think about. At the end of the week, review your list. What do you notice?

Activity: Make a list: what would you like to spend your time thinking about? What topics are interesting and important to you?

Activity: Each day, review your list of Interesting/Important Topics To Think About. Make a point of spending some time, every day, thinking about at least one of them.

If you’re seeking inspiration, try browsing among your belongings. Unless you are living a fairly monastic life, odds are that your bookshelves, closets and cupboards hold items you’ve forgotten about — or that you see in a new light.

If you’re a bookworm like me, you may be delighted at what, exactly, is on your bookshelves. If you take time to review what you own, there are probably gifts or books you bought to read ‘someday’ that you haven’t got around to. There are also old favorites that will read like new — because you’re a different person now than you were when you last read them. Scanning your bookshelves is like browsing in our own personal bookstore — and it’s tailored to your literary tastes.

It’s kinda like a book version of ‘shopping in your own closet’. Which is another fun discovery. There are probably some cool items hanging in your closet, unbeknownst to you. In my case, I’m the opposite of a clotheshorse. I don’t enjoy clothes shopping, so I don’t do it very often — and still somehow I’ve managed to acquire hidden treasures among my wardrobe.

Or what about your art and craft supplies? It can be inspiring indeed (not to mention ecologically and fiscally responsible) to identify and re-purpose what you already have. “Hmm, what can I make out of this?” may well lead you to create something unexpected and satisfying.

And as you go through your belongings, as you identify what’s pleasing or useful to you, why not take note of what’s not? Donate or dispose of what’s not serving you. Someone else might find your trash a welcome source of inspiration.

*****

Activity: Go through your books. Find something to read that you didn’t know you had.

Activity: Re-read a favorite book you haven’t read in a long time.
