If you are a fan of independent film, you already know that John Sayles is a true DaVinci:  He finances, writes, directs, acts in, edits and composes music for his award-winning films.  The diversity of his films are a marvel, covering an astonishing range of topics, characters, tones, genres and time periods.  It’s as if he’s five auteurs, packed into one person.  His films include Return of the Secaucus Seven (1979)
Lianna (1982)
Baby, It’s You (1983)
The Brother from Another Planet (1985)
Matewan (1987)
Eight Men Out (1988)
City of Hope (1990)
Passion Fish (1992)
The Secret of Roan Inish (1994)
Lone Star (1996)
Men with Guns (Hombres Armados) (1997)
Limbo (1999)
Sunshine State (2002)
Casa de los Babys (2003)
Silver City (2004)
Honeydripper (2007)
Amigo (formerly Baryo) (2010)

If that’s not enough, he’s an accomplished author who has published novels, short story anthologies and an interview series.

The Anarchists’ Convention: Stories
Dillinger in Hollywood: New and Selected Stories
Los Gusanos
John Sayles: Interviews (Conversations with Filmmakers Series-Diane Carson, ed.)
Pride of the Bimbos

Oh, and he’s fluent in Spanish, too.
